Dr. Carol Tomlinson Keynote: “Teaching Up”--What if Excellence was our Goal?"
In the long era when increasing standardized test scores has been the aspirational target for most schools, we have lost sight of excellence.  Understood appropriately, excellence should be our aspiration for every learner—striving for complex thinking, application and transfer of learning, and what Ron Berger calls “beautiful work.”  What if adjusted our aspirations and sought both to understand what it means to  teach with excellence as the hallmark of student work and therefore of our work as well?  We’ll explore briefly what “teaching up” means, how it might look, and why it matters so much in a time when equity of access to truly excellent learning opportunities for each of our learners is our clearest mandate and greatest opportunity as educators.  “Teaching up” has profound possibilities for who we recognize and teach as gifted—and for teaching the massive number of students we tend to look at less optimistically. This keynote will invite participants to think about what it means to “Teach Up” and how its philosophy and practices can revolutionize teaching and learning.

Keynote Workshop: A Tour of Some Instructional Strategies that Support Differentiation
Meeting ID: 847 173 1308
Passcode: McKoy.17
A central principle of differentiation is meeting students where they are in readiness, interests, and/or approaches to learning to maximize student opportunity for growth.  After a brief look at a framework for thinking about and planning differentiated instruction, participants will have an opportunity to examine both some “low prep” and “high prep” instructional strategies that enable a teacher to address students’ varied learning needs as they work together to extend their competencies around common learning goals.  Examples will represent a range of grade levels and content areas—and be transferable to others.

Choices, Choices, Choices…
(Passcode for recording: 6gnb^24E)
PRESENTATION DOCUMENTS:

Our lives are filled with decisions—a reality that can grow daunting at any age. How might we, our students, or our children re-approach the process of selecting, feeling grounded when there’s a sea of choice? This session invites attendees to learn techniques for quantifying decisions and empowering students (or oneself!) to increase creativity, collaboration, consensus, and critical thinking through evaluation. Exploring collaborative approaches thy extend across disciplines, each participant will be invited to stretch their own evaluative skills through activities that they may apply directly to their own classes, programs, and life. Approaches will include:
• ALoU — using a graphic organizer to compare ideas
• Criteria Matrix — applying student-generated criteria
• PCA — comparing several choices to determine which is best

Objectives covered:
• to develop a means to determine the creative potential and importance of ideas;
• to select intriguing ideas and apply methods to evaluate ideas

Students will…
• demonstrate and integrate across all content areas the ability to examine problems and proposed solutions from multiple perspectives;
• evaluate the extent to which a strategy addresses the problem.

MO Standard(s) covered:
• Work with peers to promote civil, democratic discussions and decision-making […].

Achieving Equity: Race, Ethnic and Gender Differences on Ability Tests
Equitable identification of gifted students, from diverse cultural, racial, ethnic, linguistic, and socioeconomic backgrounds, and those who have had limited educational experiences, has been an ongoing concern. Researchers have suggested that the inclusion of test questions that demand knowledge and language in intelligence tests can be problematic for traditionally underrepresented groups who have had limited early opportunities to learn the content of those tests. The present study (N=8,410) was conducted to examine the utility of three tests with verbal, nonverbal, and quantitative content that were specifically created to measure general ability in the most equitable manner possible. Little to no differences were found across race, ethnicity, gender, and parental education level on all three measures. The results suggest that the confounding impact of knowledge and language, particularly in the instructions, test content, and response format, can be minimized to achieve a more equitable method of assessing diverse populations for gifted programs. This presentation will review the results and discuss its implications for equitable identification practices.

Equitable Identification of Gifted Students Using The Naglieri General Ability Tests: Verbal, Nonverbal & Quantitative Naglieri, Brulles & Lansdowne
The Naglieri General Ability Tests apply an innovative method for equitable identification of gifted students from diverse populations using verbal, quantitative and nonverbal tests. The tests were explicitly developed to maximize fairness by using test questions (a) that require minimal knowledge, (b) do not require the use of a specific language, (c) with verbal instructions that do not demand verbal comprehension, and (d) do not require the student to orally articulate their answers. These three online tests can be used independently or jointly to measure general ability in 30 minutes each. Recent research using a large sample of students in grades K-12 (N = 8,105) in the United States demonstrates that these tests measure general ability and do so with little difference across race, ethnicity and parental educational levels. We propose that because these test questions can be solved using any language, that they hold much potential for identification of students with high general ability.

On the Journey Toward Equitable Identification
Districts across the country are on the journey toward equitable identification for gifted programming. Using the equity index rule in DESE’s Gifted Education Program Guidelines, districts can review student representation in local gifted programming to determine if minimally equitable gifted services are provided. In this session, we’ll share how our district reviewed local, historical data related to the screening, testing, and identification process, and the early steps we’ve taken on our journey to find a more equitable representation of student groups.

Addressing Fairness in Test Development
Fairness in test development is a multi-faceted construct that refers to different aspects: Is the test content fair? Are the test scores fair? Is the test designed and administered in a fair way? Is the test used and interpreted fairly? This presentation reviews key aspects of addressing fairness in test development using a performance-based measure as an illustrative example. Attendees will get a first-hand look at how test developers considered fairness when creating items, and key considerations including accessibility, universal design, and cultural reviews. The presentation will also review different approaches taken to ensure that test standardization processes and scores are meeting standards of psychometric fairness. Attendees will learn to effectively evaluate whether a test meets commonly accepted guidelines and standards to claim that it is as fair as possible, for as many groups as possible, in all aspects of development and use.

Historical Influencers – creating social media accounts for famous people from history
It’s time to bring traditional “living history museum” experiences in to the 21st century. What might Meriwether Lewis or Cleopatra’s Twitter feeds look like? If you tuned in to Marco Polo’s YouTube channel, what sort of “Lives” would you find? Can you picture the selfies Rosa Parks or William Shakespeare might have shared on Instagram? How many followers would Mozart have on TikTok?

In this session, we’ll share ideas for how your students can put themselves in the shoes of influencers from any era & express their ideas through social media platforms that are popular today. Walk away with resources you can put to use in your intermediate, middle school, or high school classroom in a wide variety of units.

Socratic Inquiry: A Pedagogy to Address Critical Thinking Skills in the Gifted Classroom
What is more important in the educational process than acquiring knowledge and developing skills? Far more important than either one is the goal of enlarging understanding. When students engage in learning for understanding, its very nature involves critical and higher order thinking. When engaged in learning for understanding, students gain an appreciation for why the knowledge and the skills are the important foundation of understanding. Centuries ago, Socrates gave us the model for teaching for understanding that can be used in today’s classrooms and in all disciplines – questioning.

Emphasizing the Arts: Putting the 'A' in STEAM
In classrooms at all levels, there has been a steady push for a (re-)focus on STEAM. Teachers are being challenged to incorporate more Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Mathematics into their classrooms. The A of this equation…the ARTS…is the piece that often struggles to be meaningfully included. The challenge for teachers is often how to make meaningful connections between the Arts and the subjects or topics they teach. In this time together, we will work at Full STEAM on generating and testing ideas to connect the arts (Drama? Cubism? Sculpture? Conceptual Art? Music? Surrealism?) to our present or future classroom experiences. Creativity and curiosity are the only requirements to have some fun and to leave with some ideas on how you might incorporate the arts into your next classroom!

The Gifted Twice Exceptional (2e) Learner: Identifying Learning Complexities and Resources for Success
Passcode: #Gam2022

Gifted and general educators, parents, and caregivers often struggle with the complexities when identifying the characteristics of twice-exceptional (2e) students. It can be difficult to identify who in the building can provide support or assist in locating resources. Finally, it is vital to learn how to integrate technology to support 2e learners, and how to create instructional materials for 2e learners to enhance learning in inclusive classrooms. Participants will be able to:
(1) Identify common characteristics of twice-exceptional (2e) students and be able to locate resources and people in their building for support; (2) Integrate technology and instructional strategies to support twice-exceptional (2e) students in inclusive general and special education environments; (3) Implement instructional strategies with 2e students in the classroom in order to help facilitate their intuitive qualities, celebrate creativity, and develop resilience.

I'm in the Business of Hope: How to Keep Believing when Things Feel Impossible
Life.  Is.  HARD!  As a psychologist, I often say I am in the “business of hope.”  But what is hope?  And how do we have it authentically when it feels like the world is increasingly chaotic, unfair, and cruel?  This talk will focus on what hope truly is from a psychological standpoint and explore how to apply it meaningfully to our lives.  I also will talk about the importance of hope from a neurodiversity perspective.  We will also identify potential barriers towards having hope and workshop solutions to overcome those challenges.
